MG has revealed its new, improved version of the ZS EV, which arrives in the brand's dealerships next month. The renewed model has a new look, but the bigger news is significantly longer range from a new 72kWh battery pack.
It will be offered with a choice of two trim levels and two battery variants. The 72 kWh Long Range will offer a range of 273 miles compared with 163 miles for the existing model (based on official WLTP measurements). A 51 kWh battery with a 198-mile range will be offered in the line up next year.
MG has also fixed many of the complaints from owners of the old model, with a new, easier to use charge flap and an 'iSMART connectivity system' which allows owners to set various functions from their smartphones. This allows the ZS to be pre-heated while still connected to the mains and to use a charge timer, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
Charging status is shown on a four stage indicator LED inside the charging port. The combination Type 2 and CCS charger provides up to 7kW fast charging using the on-board AC charger, or up to 76kW DC rapid charging.
This means the Long Range 72 kWh battery can be charged from 0-100% in 10½ hours on a standard 7kW charger, or as little as 42 minutes on a 100kW rapid charger.
In styling terms, the ZS EV gets a new look front end, with a filled-in grille to improve aerodynamics. New LED headlights, a redesigned rear bumper and new wheels complete the changes. Inside, there's a new 10.1-inch tablet-style touchscreen, with a new instrument cluster and wireless phone charging.
Prices have yet to be announced, but expect them to be very keen and sit comfortably under the £35,000 limit for government grant eligibility.
