Council to remove Crown Court recycling bins

If you're looking to offload some of your recycling at one of the bins in Crown Court car park you'll need to hurry: some are being taken away at the end of the month.

Waverley is to remove its mixed recycling bins - the ones that accept cardboard, plastic and glass - at its sites across the borough as the number and type of items it will accept for kerbside recycling increases.

Small electrical items and textiles will still be accepted until the autumn, when those collection banks will also be removed.

Householders will then be able to put out small electrical items and textiles for recycling at the kerbside.

Defending the move on social media, Waverley borough councillor for Witley Maxine Gale said the change had been made partly because people don't use the sites properly.

"Sadly the bring sites are not used correctly by everyone and adhoc waste is left there which costs to clear up and the recycling can be contaminated with wrong products," she said.

A statement from Waverley explained: "All of the materials currently accepted in the mixed recycling bins at the bring sites are able to be recycled via household collection in the existing blue wheelie-bins.

"Residents have historically had mixed views on the bring sites, with some viewing them as a useful public amenity, while others have complained they are an eyesore and an open invitation to vandalism and fly-tipping."

And the council says that phasing out the sites will free up valuable space in town centres, which could be used to create additional parking spaces for cycles or electric vehicle charging points.
