Workmen strip fittings from Barclays Bank building

By The Editor 17th Jul 2020

The sad end of a Godalming institution: the heart is being ripped out of the Barclays Bank building in Godalming High Street this week as workmen dismantle the interior.

The bank closed its doors on May 15th, blaming declining footfall as customers moved online.

It has been operating on the site since 17th December 1928. Barclays said that in the year prior to its closure, 44% of its customers had used neighbouring branches for transactions. It added that only 92 people used the bank exclusively for all their banking needs. Workmen from fitout and construction company ISG have now moved in, and will be on site until the end of next week removing the fittings. The building is now being marketed by real estate company JLL.
