A community café that provides a caring and friendly meeting place for vulnerable people officially opened its doors this week at its new home at The Burys.
Cellar Camino Café, which is mainly staffed by volunteers, provides a safe and warm space for people who may need support and friendship alongside their cup of tea or coffee.
As we reported in July the cafe closed the doors of its Crown Court premises after the lease came up for renewal earlier this year. It had been operating from the building for 41 years.
Waverley Borough Council's staff restaurant at The Burys closed the same month, and following negotiations, the Cellar has now reopened in the former Burys Cafe in Bridge Street.
The café is used as a referral point from other organisations including GP surgeries and the Citizens Advice Bureau, and has a 'roots and shoots' project to support other shopkeepers and organisations within the town.
Dr Chris Jagger MBE, Chair of Warehouse Christian Trust – Cellar and Skillway Projects Godalming, said: "There are so many people who helped make this happen, but we would really like to extend a big thank-you to Waverley Borough Council who offered us a new home for our café and have been exceptionally kind and welcoming.
"I am overjoyed that we are here and know that this is going to be a wonderful resource for the community. Many of our café regulars are those living in difficult circumstances, and having a new home where we can continue to nurture them is just fantastic."
The café will be open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 2.30pm (Tuesdays 10am to 2.30pm) and will offer homemade cakes, sandwiches, toasted paninis and more.
The name Cellar Camino Café refers to the pilgrimage many make along The El Camino route of St James to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.
