The 'vast majority' of Godalming College students have secured their first choice university place as A-level and BTec results were released.

The college says most students are now "looking forward to their future despite the turmoil of COVID-19 which disrupted their last few months of their college experience".

Four students - Anna Wilderspin, Sam Davis, Matthew Casey and Eve Lunn - have been accepted into Oxford, and students Lola Wright, Abigail Barrass, Dylan Stewart, Daphne Pleming, Emily Tepley, Amelia Blackwell and Pip Pearce have won places at Cambridge.

Students Maia Shouksmith, Catherine Lockwood, Catrin Palmer, Charlotte Cranfield, Amberley Evans, Amelia Morris and Ella Collinson have been accepted to study medicine, and Sam Tuckley Byrne, Hannah Tedd, Madeline Ball and Abigail Barrass have been accepted to study veterinary medicine.

Other students heading to prestigious universities include James Casemore, who has a place at Yale, and Joshua Turnbull, who is heading to the Vancouver Film School.

Principal Emma Young said that despite the majority of students getting their expected grades, some students had not got the results they needed.

"In common with the national picture, there are some cases where the national standardisation process has not produced expected outcomes," she said, vowing: "We will do all we can to help and support those students."

And she paid tribute to the students' resilience and the 'way in which our students have dealt with these highly unusual circumstances'.

"I would also like to pay tribute to our wonderful teachers and support staff who have coped admirably and done their best to support our students during this difficult time for everyone," she added.

"Our students should feel proud of what they have achieved over the past couple of years. We wish them the very best with the next stage of their future, whether that be university, an apprenticeship or employment."
