Godalming Town Council has agreed to back the Godalming Nappy Library with a cash donation from its Carbon Reduction & Biodiversity Fund.
The council's Environment and Planning Committee agreed to make a donation of £1,200 after seeing a presentation from the group.
The cash will help meet the cost of promoting the library and providing information about the service.
The Nappy Library, which opened in January, hires out a range of reusable cloth nappy kits ranging in size from newborn to potty trainers.
Currently 94% of nappies are single use: The Nappy Library aims to encourage a switch from single use nappies to reusable. The kits contain a range of 20 to 30 modern cloth nappies and accessories to allow users to try them before they buy, either at low or no cost.
The Library also provides guides, online demonstrations and support.
With 4% of the UK's landfill waste created from disposable nappies, the use of cloth nappies will help to achieve a reduction in landfill and CO2.
The total global warming impact of disposable nappies for one child from birth to potty training (aged two and a half) equates to 550kg of CO2.
Although The Nappy Library had to close to new members during lockdown, local families of newborn or very young babies who have used the library since the first national lockdown are projected to save 5.5 tonnes of CO2 by the time those children have been potty trained.
The more families that make the switch, the bigger the impact on the reduction in CO2.
