Godalming town centre could become a 20mph zone for drivers under plans due to be considered by councillors tomorrow.

The town council is thinking about establishing a '20 is Plenty' zone in the town, although it has yet to make a final decision on which roads will be included if the idea gains approval.

The motion, which will be considered at tomorrow (Thursday) night's Policy & Management Committee meeting, was put forward by Councillor Steve Williams and seconded by leader Paul Follows.

Officers say they believe the move will improve air quality and road safety in the town, as well as encouraging more people to walk and cycle, which in turn would support the council's climate emergency objectives.

Figures quoted in support of the move show that 20mph zones in areas where traffic and pedestrians are in close proximity have reduced the number of accidents by 40% as well as cutting noise levels. The move will also, the report before councillors states, encourage more people to walk and cycle, and add only 10 seconds per mile to journeys. They can also reduce vehicle emissions by 12% due to less acceleration and braking.

If the plan is approved, the town council will approach both Waverley and Surrey County Council for support in drawing up a map of the affected areas, and implementing the proposals.
