Former Godalming Mayor Margaret (Peggy) Macfarlane has died at the age of 101.

Godalming Town Council has announced that Mrs Macfarlane died from natural causes at 2am this morning (Monday) at her home in Farncombe. She is survived by her grandchildren.

Mrs Macfarlane joined Godalming Town Council in 1974, along with her husband Walter, and became mayor in 1984. She served as a councillor until 1991, and despite her age kept very much in touch with the town council over the years.

Godalming Mayor Penny Rivers said: "Peggy served her community for very many years with good grace and great generosity. It was a privilege to know her, and she will be much missed. May she rest in peace and rise in glory."
