Josh's next adventure: 5 months, 5,000 miles, £50,000.

As if cycling from Godalming to Land's End wasn't enough, Milford man Josh Garman is now heading off on a new fundraising adventure - cycling around the entire coast of Britain.

Josh hit the headlines last September when he undertook the marathon cycle ride to the end of the country to raise money for Hope for Hasti, a charity set up by the parents of nine-year-old Hasti Brannigan, who has a rare genetic disorder.

Called Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, the condition affects growth and causes other physical and cognitive challenges.

Hasti's father Chris became known as the Barefoot Soldier when he walked from Land's End to Edinburgh barefoot to raise funds for critical research into her condition.

Next challenge.

Having completed both that adventure, and a subsequent trip in which he walked barefoot from Cobham to Chobham, Josh is now all set to take on his next challenge. He leaves for Berwick upon Tweed tomorrow (Friday), and plans to set off on two wheels along the coast on Saturday morning. This time the task is much more onerous - he's planning on cycling 5,000 miles in five months, and hopes to raise £50,000 for Hasti's appeal. As well as cycling a greater distance, he will also be transporting a greater load than last time - a sleeping pod on two wheels. Painted bright yellow and adorned with the Hope for Hasti logo, the pod will, Josh hopes, help him to make an entrance into the communities he will visit on his epic journey. He describes the camper as "my sleeping pod and personal billboard". The pod, built by Josh and his dad during the last lockdown, is made of Corex - a lightweight polypropelene - mounted on a wooden base. On his last cycling trip he was accompanied by ET - a soft toy strapped to his handlebars - but this time he is leaving the extra-terrestrial at home, and will instead be taking Hasti's Obama the Llama toy with him for companionship. The route.

His trip will take him clockwise around the British coastline, from Berwick south towards London, along the south coast and the tip of the country in Cornwall, then along the edge of the Bristol Channel and up and around the Welsh coast.

He is hoping that by the time he has passed through the Lake District, Scotland will have reopened its borders to travellers from England. His route will then trace the coastline all the way around Scotland and back to his original starting point.

He'll be carrying all his essential items with him, and sleeping in his pod each night.

During his Cornish trip he was offered a place to stay every night bar two. People put him up in their spare rooms, on their sofas, or let him camp in their gardens.

Covid has, of course, complicated things: "For the first month, until the middle of May, I can't stay in people's houses," he says. "I can't go inside anywhere."

People power.

So it's an outdoor life for the first four weeks - but if the Cornwall trip is anything to go by, people's kindness will see him well cared for the rest of the time. "I was so amazed by the kindness of strangers," he says. "I was out for 23 days, and on 21 of them someone offered me somewhere to stay. "The best bit about it was meeting people. It wasn't just me turning up and people seeing me as this interesting traveller to talk to. Many of these people had stories of their own. People came out to meet me, I had people giving me food - it was amazing." And he has just discovered that a bit of people power will help make one leg of his journey more straightforward: the Humber Bridge is currently closed to cyclists, but an enterprising group of locals have worked together to get him special permission to make the crossing. A challenge.

He has no illusions about the scale of the task he has set himself.

"It's going to be tough," says. "Obviously, sleeping rough is quite disconcerting, and the camper will affect my balance, especially when it's windy."

Since the Land's End trip Josh has spent time with Hasti and her family, who are all hugely supportive of his fundraising efforts.

He describes his time with Hasti as "full of joy".

"As someone who values freedom so much, to see a child who doesn't have that freedom makes me want to do everything I can to help," he says.
