Godalming's MP, Jeremy Hunt, has led calls for residents to observe the new law that comes into force today (Friday) and wear face coverings in public buildings as well as on public transport.
Face coverings must now be worn in enclosed public spaces, including shops, shopping centres, takeaways, banks and post offices. as well as on buses and trains. The regulations apply to everybody except children under 11 and those exempt on medical grounds, such as people with respiratory or cognitive impairments that make it difficult for them to wear a mask.
The fine for not wearing a face covering is £100.
Mr Hunt said: "There is significant evidence that face coverings can help reduce the spread of Covid-19 and so to protect others, as well as yourself, I strongly encourage everyone to wear a mask in enclosed public spaces."
His plea was echoed by Goalming Town Council, which has asked shoppers to observe the new rule.
Council leader Paul Follows posted on Facebook this morning: "This is just a reminder that from today (24th July) you need to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces."
"As has been mentioned there are a number of exemptions, and I urge residents to take those seriously and to be mindful that not all accessibility needs are visible.
"Thank you for supporting our High Street and your fellow residents by doing this (as this is really for the benefit of others). Other people doing this protects you. Together we protect the community."
A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said the force would not be stationing officers in shop doorways to enforce the new rules, saying it would 'encourage' the wearing of coverings.
"Surrey Police will continue its approach of engaging, encouraging and explaining the current regulations that are in place and how the public can comply with them," the spokeswoman told Nub News.
"Our priorities lie with public safety and ensuring the force can operate effectively to those who need us. People need to take personal responsibility for their actions, in particular during this heath emergency, and this includes adhering to the latest government guidance.
"Local policing teams across the force will increase patrols in town centre areas to offer reassurance to retailers and members of the public, however we expect retailers to manage their stores as they have been doing for a number of weeks now.
"Where there is anti-social behaviour and disorder, police will assess and attend if required as part of our usual policing response."
Volunteers from Sewing4Good will be selling masks on a pop-up stall under a Rotary Club banner in the High Street today.
Masks are available in return for a £5 donation to charities The Cellar and Art Hub at The Meath.
They have all been created from old duvets, sheets and pillowcases by a team of volunteers. The stall will be open from 10am to noon.
