A spokesperson for Godalming Town Council has expressed its 'profound sadness' at the death of Prince Philip, who died this morning at the age of 99.
An announcement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
In a statement, the town council said: "It is with profound sadness that Godalming Town Council has to inform you of the passing of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, aged 99.
"Due to COVID-19 an online book of condolence will be available – please visit www.royal.uk.
"Also, due to COVID-19 restrictions, members of the public are encouraged to make charitable donations in lieu of floral tributes to a charity of their choice. Any floral tributes that are laid will be moved to Orange Court Farm on the Loseley Estate."
Godalming Mayor Penny Rivers said: "Prince Phillip made a positive effect to the lives of many thanks to his awards scheme. He lived a life of duty and was loved and respected by his family, by the nation and by the Commonwealth. He has been a constant in our lives. May he rest in peace."
The Prince visited Milford in the 1970s when he dropped in by helicopter at Rodborough School to support pupils working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award.
