Godalming marked Remembrance Sunday with a shortened yet no less poignant ceremony at the war memorial this morning.
The outdoor ceremony became necessary after the Government put England back into lockdown last week. The town council urged people to observe the Two Minute Silence on their doorsteps, but a few dozen turned out to observe the shortened service and the laying of wreaths.
Instead of the usual church service and parade, representatives of Service and other organisations in the town laid wreaths following a short address by Canon The Rev John Harkin.
Mayor Penny Rivers recited the words of the the traditional hymn I Vow To Thee My Country, and bugler David Sergeant form Godalming Town Band played the Last Post as town clerk Andy Jeffrey lowered the Union Flag.
Following the Two Minute Silence, The Revielle and the raising of the flag, Neil Godden gave the exhortation:
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them." Wreaths were then left by: Mayor Penny Rivers on behalf of the people of Godalming and later for Churches Together; Cdr Chris Cook RN on behalf of the Royal Navy; Neil Godden on behalf of the Army and the South East Coast Ambulance Service; Simon Hubbard on behalf of the RAF and later on behalf of the Air Training Corps; Fiona Jenkins on behalf of the Royal British Legion and Godalming poppy sellers; Major Graham Hodgson MBE on behalf of Godalming veterans and later Godalming Freemasons; Councillor Paul Follows on behalf of Godalming town councillors and staff and later on behalf of the Army Cadet Force; Councillor Steve Cosser on behalf of Surrey County Council councillors and staff and later on behalf of the Probus Club. The National Anthem was then played over loudspeakers. Following the ceremony other wreaths were laid, including one on behalf of Surrey Police by Sgt Claire Sutherland and PC Chris Skillicorn-Aston; and on behalf of Godalming Society of Friends and Godalming Round Table. Other organisations which will lay wreaths between now and Remembrance Day on Wednesday are: Justices of the Peace, Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, Royal Army Medical Corps, St John Ambulance, Scouts and Cubs, Guides and Brownies, Godalming Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Godalming Woolsack, Godalming Band, Godalming Round Table, Godalming & District Chamber of Commerce, Godalming Good Neighbours, Godalming Afternoon Townswomen's Guild and the Women's Institute.
