Godalming town councillor Steve Cosser has praised Farncombe Day Centre staff and volunteers for their support for elderly people in the town over the last year.

His comments came as the council's Policy and Management Committee considered a report about the centre's operations from 2019-2020.

During normal times the centre offers activities and support to people aged over 50 from Godalming and surrounding villages. It is open every weekday throughout the year, and there is a minibus service available for people without access to transport.

Staff and volunteers provide a daily hot meal, snacks and drinks, social activities and entertainment, and services including hairdressing, assisted bathing and chiropody.

During the pandemic those services have stopped, but the centre has continued to offer a hot meal every weekday, delivered to people's doorsteps. The two-course lunch costs £6.50.

While councillors agreed to note the report, Cllr Cosser said of the centre: "It's a real force for good, and in particular the way they have responded during the pandemic in reaching out and getting meals into the community has been absolutely fabulous."
