Loseley Fields children learn about life aboard a liner

Children from Loseley Fields Primary School in Farncombe got to experience what life was like on a luxury Edwardian liner when they held Titanic Day at school on Tuesday.

The children went to school dressed in costume befitting a passenger in either the First Class cabin or the Third Class deck.

The day was laid on as part of the Year Three classes' Local Heroes project, which was looking at the life of Farncombe man Jack Phillips, the ship's radio operator, who stayed at his post to send out distress signals as the Titanic foundered.

Each child was given a ticket for the 'journey' - one class becoming First Class passengers for the day, and the other playing the part of Third Class passengers.

Some children chose to go along dressed as members of the ship's crew - and the teachers joined in the fun, dressing up as the ship's captain, and other crew members.

A school spokeswoman told Nub News: "We focused on life on board a liner - we didn't dwell on the disaster, although all the children are aware of what happened to the ship. This was more to give them a taste of what life was like for passengers on the ship, and how it would have been if she had made it safely to New York."

The children started the day by taking their ticket, and then watched a virtual 'walk-round' of the ship, sent a postcard home, learnt some Morse Code and were taught to waltz in the style of a First Class passenger.

After their busy morning they played 'deck games' such as quoits and hopscotch on the playground, before sitting down to afternoon tea - cakes, scones and drinks from china teacups for the class lucky enough to be First Class passengers for the day, and biscuits and water for the unlucky Third Class passengers.

Loseley Fields holds a dress-up day for children to enjoy every half term. To see more of what goes on at the school, visit their Facebook page.
