Museum to reopen to the general public on September 7th

By The Editor 19th Aug 2020

Visitors are being welcomed back at Godalming Museum as it starts to slowly reopen after lockdown.

Part of the museum is now open, and hosting a fascinating exhibition titled 'Godalming's Secret Cemetery'.

The displays tell the story of the cemetery which was in use from the ninth to 12th centuries on land that is now the Mint Street car park and Orchard Close development near the station.

The astonishing find was uncovered during excavations in 2014, and additional information abut the site and is contents came to light as a result of research carried out at the University of Roehampton.

Only museum Friends and trustees are currently able to visit the exhibition: it will open to the general public on September 7th. Tickets need to be booked: call 01483 426510. Entry is free, although the museum, which has suffered a significant fall in income due to the virus, would be grateful for donations.

To comply with government guidelines on Coronavirus only the downstairs exhibition gallery will be open, and the tea room will remain closed. The toilets will not be open, and there will be a limited range of items for sale in the shop.

Visitors are asked to enter the museum via the garden entrance from the South Street car park.

They will be asked to wear masks, use the hand sanitiser provided and follow a signed route through the exhibition.

Staff will also note visitors' names and phone numbers for sharing with NHS Test and Trace if required.
