New shallows will encourage fish back to Hell Ditch

Workmen have been busy at Hell Ditch where it runs under Borough Road today, creating fish passes to encourage more species back to the river.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "We are currently improving Hell Ditch in Godalming as part of a wider programme to make the River Wey more attractive to fish like chub, dace and trout.

"Over the next three weeks, we will be installing a number of shallow gravelly beds and woody debris to improve the flow and restore the channel, which is currently too wide and deep. This will make it more effective as a route for fish migration.

"The longer-term programme will secure fish passes at 12 weirs between Weybridge and Elstead, enabling fish to move across more than 100km of the Wey catchment."
