Farncombe and Godalming beat officer PC Chris Skillicorn-Aston writes for Nub News about what the local policing team have been doing recently.

Over the last few weeks in between our assigned tasks and self generated work, PCSOs Ward, Levy and Oliver, along with myself, have focused some evening foot patrols around St John's Street in Farncombe and Godalming town centre and rail station.

We've met business owners and staff, college students, school children, taxi drivers, lost people looking for directions, and some just stopping to talk about issues in the locality or say how nice it is to see us out on patrol.

E-scooters.

One of the things we're hearing about a lot is the anti-social use of electric scooters. If an E-scooter is on your Christmas list you may wish to consider that it is currently illegal to use them on a public highway – that's roads and footpaths and in other public spaces that aren't specifically designated for their use. The only place they can currently be used legally is on private land with the owner's permission. If you're found riding an E-Scooter in a public place you could face a significant fine, points on your driving licence if you have one and having the scooter seized from you. Please be aware. Shed security.

Shed breaks can be a really difficult crime to detect sometimes. Sheds are often secluded and not frequently visited by their owners meaning that offences are sometimes discovered and reported with broad timescales.

It's easy to fill your shed with high value items without realising – power tools, garden strimmers, mowers etc are an attractive prospect to thieves.

So it's worth taking the time to think about the structure and security of your shed and its contents. There's little point in an expensive lock if the structure itself consists of brittle, rotting timber.

It's worth taking the time to consider access to your shed: do you have a full-height garden gate with bolts top and bottom? Is your property open and accessible or do you have sturdy secure fencing? Have you considered motion sensor lighting and CCTV?

Alternatively if securing your shed is cost prohibitive perhaps consider keeping expensive items somewhere else like an indoor utility cupboard.
