News that demand on supplies is "exceptionally high" have prompted Thames Water, which supplies households and businesses in Godalming, to encourage customers to help save water.

The company says that on some days the demand has been as much as 20% higher than normal.

"Because of this, it is important that we continue to work together to keep taps running as temperatures rise over the weekend," it said in a statement. "The latest stats show that the average person uses around 143 litres of water every day. With our population growing by 100,000 people every year, we'll soon get to a point where there won't be enough water to go around. "We can't take more water from rivers without damaging the environment and we can't rely on rainfall. We need to be smarter with how we use water, to protect our future and the future of generations to come." Tips on saving water include: When emptying your paddling pool, take the water out with watering cans and water the garden.

You could also take a bucket and use the water to wash your windows or your car.

Try to limit showers to four minutes.

Swap your garden hose for a water butt.

Save water, electricity and dishwasher tablets by only starting the dishwasher once it's fully loaded.

Water your plants in the evening, using a watering can.
