UP CLOSE: Godalming Nub News aims to support our community, promoting shops, businesses, charities, clubs and sports groups.
We profile some of these businesses and organisations regularly in a feature called 'Up Close in Godalming'.
Today we caught up with Mark from Ritual Coffee UK in Farncombe.
The commuters may not be heading to London in such great numbers at the moment, but the Ritual Coffee kiosk on Farncombe station's platform one is still a busy place.
There are still plenty of passengers looking to buy coffee, tea, hot chocolate and breakfast as they wait for their train. Plus, of course, a newspaper to read on the journey.
Ritual serves its own bespoke coffee, sourced by owner Kay Middleton during a tour of coffee-producing countries way back, before Ritual began in 2007. Un Poco De Cielo translates as 'a little bit of heaven,' and has helped warm the commutes of thousands over the years. Ritual also serves filter coffee from various countries: last week it was Ethopian, this week it's Indonesian.
They also have Teapig teas, with some tempting flavours including rhubarb and ginger, as well as serving hot chocolate. For breakfast, customers can choose from croissants, pastries and muffins, or bacon, sausage or egg sandwiches.
Ritual continues to be a pick-up station for veg boxes from local supplier Cheesmans, but you can now order anything from their website. Just email a list of fruit and veg directly to Cheesman Bros and put in your email subject box 'Collect from Farncombe Station'.
Milk, eggs and grab bags of coffee are also available from the kiosk.
Run by manager Joan Dizon, Ritual Coffee continues to play an important part in people's day - even more so during the current pandemic. The kiosk stayed open through the last lockdown, and is doing so again this time around.
Although the numbers of people passing through the station have dropped, Mark says, people are still commuting to the capital, and a new market is growing up: those working from home, parents on their way back after walking children to the local school. Passers-by drop in, many bringing their dogs while out on a their daily walk. "We say the dogs bring their owners," Mark laughs. "The dogs get a biscuit, the owners get a coffee."
"It's nice to see people coming out, and just chatting, breaking up their day," Mark adds. "It's really important, seeing other faces and asking how people are."
Find Ritual Coffee on platform one - no ticket to travel is necessary - from 5.30am to noon on weekdays, and Saturday mornings from 7am to noon.
