Godalming's Town Council leader and Waverley Deputy  Leader, Lib Dem Paul Follows, sports an appropriately coloured mask.

Godalming's MP, Jeremy Hunt, has led calls for residents to observe the new law that comes into force today (Friday) and wear face coverings in public buildings as well as on public transport.

Face coverings must now be worn in enclosed public spaces, including shops, shopping centres, takeaways, banks and post offices. as well as on buses and trains. The regulations apply to everybody except children under 11 and those exempt on medical grounds, such as people with respiratory or cognitive impairments that make it difficult for them to wear a mask.

Waverley councillors have voted en masse for a motion to oppose a single Surrey-wide unitary authority.

At yesterday's (Wednesday) full council meeting, the motion to explore other options for the future structure of local government in Surrey was backed by 51 members from across all political parties and independent councillors. No councillor voted against the motion: two abstained.

Dr Chris Jagger, chair of the Warehouse Christian Trust, which runs the Cellar and Skillway, has told Nub News that despite shutting the doors on the premises in Crown Court after 41 years at the end of the lease, he is optimistic that the Cellar will find a new home, and aims to continue a presence at the heart of Godalming.

The staff and trustees are researching possible locations for their ongoing activity, and this could be a staged process, with short and long term options, he said.

Bishop John Neale dies at 93

A former rector of St Peter's Church, Hascombe, has died at the age of 93.

John Robert Geoffrey Neale AKC became the first suffragan Bishop of Ramsbury in the Church of England when he moved on from St Peter's in 1974.

Waverley is to remove its mixed recycling bins - the ones that accept cardboard, plastic and glass - at its sites across the borough as the number and type of items it will accept for kerbside recycling increases.

Sewing 4 Good's pop-up face mask sale stand will be in the High Street from 10am to noon on Friday morning (July 24th), the day the wearing of face masks becomes compulsory in shops.
